Looking for a Metal Fabricator in South Wales?

Searching for someone to make a gate, a railing or a run of structural steel is easy enough. Finding someone who actually makes it themselves is the harder part.

Type "metal fabricator near me" into Google and you will get a long list. What that list will not tell you is which of those names owns a workshop, and which is simply taking your job and passing it down the line to someone else. The difference matters, and it shows up in the price, the quality and how the whole thing goes when something needs sorting.

We have been at this in Newport since 1919. Five generations of the same family, same trade, and a fair bit of hard-won opinion about how it should be done. So here is an honest guide to picking the right firm, whether you end up choosing us or not.

Do they actually make it, or just sell it?

This is the first thing to get straight. Plenty of companies advertise gates and railings without ever picking up a grinder. They take your order, mark it up, and hand it to a workshop like ours to build. You pay more, and you are a step further away from the people doing the work.

There is a simple way to check. Ask where the work is made. A real fabricator will happily tell you about their workshop, and most will let you come and see it. If the answer gets vague, or everything is "sourced from our trusted partners," you have probably found a middleman.

When you deal with us, you deal with the bench. The person quoting your driveway gate is often the person who will cut and weld it. Nothing gets lost in translation, because there is no translation.

What does "since 1919" really buy you?

Longevity is not just a nice line for the website. A firm that has lasted a century has done it by not letting people down, because word travels fast in South Wales and a bad job follows you around.

It also means the knowledge is real. We have made gates for houses that have since changed hands three times. We have repaired ironwork our grandfathers put up. That kind of history teaches you what lasts and what fails, and you cannot shortcut it. When you ask us whether a design will work, the answer comes from having tried it, not from guessing.

Galvanising: the question most people forget to ask

Here is where a lot of cheap metalwork comes undone, quite literally. Steel left bare, or simply painted over, will rust. Give it a couple of wet Welsh winters and the rot sets in around the joints and the fixings.

The fix is hot-dip galvanising. The steel goes into a bath of molten zinc, which bonds to the metal inside and out and protects it for decades. We galvanise every piece of exterior work as standard. Not as an upsell, not as a "premium option," just as the right way to do it.

So when you are comparing quotes, ask the question plainly. Is this galvanised, or just painted? A quote that looks cheap often looks that way because the protection has been left off. You will pay the difference later, with interest.

Who turns up to fit it?

A gate is only as good as its installation. You can build the finest set of wrought iron gates in Wales, and if the posts are set badly they will drop and drag within a year.

Ask who does the fitting. With us, it is our own team, not a subcontractor booked in for the day. That matters for two reasons. The people fitting it understand how it was built, and if anything needs adjusting later, you are ringing the same firm that made it. One number, one point of responsibility.

Local knowledge is not a slogan

We know the wind that comes off the hills in Monmouthshire. We know how exposed a plot in the valleys can be, and how different that is to a sheltered street in Cardiff. That shapes how we build, from the gauge of the steel to the depth of the post footings.

A firm that covers "the whole of the UK from our national hub" is not going to know your patch. We work across South Wales and over into Bristol and the West of England, and we have made metalwork for most kinds of property and weather this corner of the country can throw at it.

The questions worth asking

Before you sign anything, run through these. The answers tell you almost everything.

• Do you make the work yourselves, and can I see the workshop?
• Is the steel hot-dip galvanised as standard?
• Who carries out the installation?
• Can I see photos of real jobs you have done, not stock images?
• Do I get a fixed price in writing after a site visit?

A good firm will have easy answers to all five. If any of them cause a bit of shuffling, take note.
